Ten new Community Murals at NYC Health + Hospitals!
Date
January 9, 2022The Community Murals Project is a flagship of the public hospital system’s Arts in Medicine program, which seeks to foster the emotional well-being, promote healing, wellness, and engagement of patients, families, employees, and the greater health system’s community by integrating all disciplines of the arts such as literary, visual and performing arts throughout the public hospital system.
The murals project is designed to encourage creativity, lower stress, build trust and increase engagement between hospitals and members of their surrounding communities. The murals also create spaces for joy as well as healing for patients and frontline medical workers who have been under enormous stress during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The artists, who were selected from among hundreds of applicants, developed the concepts for each of the murals through virtual focus groups with staff, as well as patients and community members, and then brought to life in designated paint sessions.
The Community Mural Project builds upon a mural tradition that started in the 1930s when the depression-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) supported the creation of hundreds of murals across New York City’s public hospitals, and that continued decades later with murals by world-famous artists such as Romare Bearden, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. The Community Murals Project is the country’s largest public hospital murals project since the WPA.
The three-year project launched in 2019, and led to 25 facility murals, including all eleven of the system’s hospitals, all five rehab and long-term care facilities, and nine neighborhood clinics that are a part of H+H’s Gotham Health community health center network. In addition, to cap the project, a mural was developed at the health system’s new headquarters at 50 Water Street in Manhattan.
