Program: Arts in Health
Area of Work: Arts
Grant Purpose: connect2culture
CaringKind’s mission is to create, deliver, and promote comprehensive and compassionate care and support services for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. A major program of CaringKind is connect2culture® , which offers training to the staff of cultural venues, including performing arts organizations, museums, and botanical gardens, in developing access programs for people with dementia. At the same time, connect2culture provides opportunities for dementia caregivers to meet and socialize with one another as they experience the arts together with the persons in their care.
Purpose: To support core operations of connect2culture®.
A two-year grant from the Illumination Fund supports connect2culture® operations, initially in the Bronx where the goal is to reach all the major cultural sites and establish at least one new fully operating access program by the end of the first year. Year II will continue work in the Bronx as well as identify new connect2culture partners and host sides in additional communities of need.
Connect2culture® creates engaging dementia-friendly programs and spaces in partnership with cultural organizations around New York City’s five boroughs. Through training and outreach, the program collaborates with art and history museums, botanical gardens and performing arts organizations to ensure a supportive and welcoming experience for families impacted by dementia. The benefits of the program extend beyond its direct participants. Connect2culture helps breathe new life into local communities, expanding the reach of cultural organizations, building their capacities, and opening their doors to new populations, while introducing communities to cultural opportunities in their own neighborhoods. The program currently partners with 18 cultural organizations, including Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, The New York Pops, the Jewish Museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, and others. In the Bronx, connect2culture has partnered with Alvin Ailey’s Arts In Education program and with The New York Botanical Garden.
