Laurie Tisch Honored as ESPN’s 2026 Sports Philanthropist of the Year

On July 14, Laurie Tisch, Founder and President of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, was recognized as ESPN’s 2026 Sports Philanthropist of the Year at the 12th annual ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards. The award celebrates leaders who are using the power of sports to create positive change in their communities.

The honor reflects Laurie’s long-standing belief that sports are about far more than competition. They can build confidence, strengthen mental health, create a sense of belonging, and open doors for young people to reach their full potential.

That belief inspired the launch of Play to Thrive, the Illumination Fund’s $10 million initiative to expand access to sports and play across New York City and the surrounding region. The initiative supports organizations that are removing barriers to participation, strengthening coaching and mentorship, and creating more opportunities for girls and underserved young people to experience the lifelong benefits of sports.

Through Play to Thrive, the Illumination Fund has provided catalytic support for Gotham FC’s Keep Her in the Game, in partnership with Girls Leadership, and Elevate Play, in partnership with Playworks. The initiative also supports Street Soccer USA, South Bronx United, City Parks Foundation, and the Aspen Institute’s Project Play,bringing together nonprofit, public, and private-sector partners to make sports more accessible and inclusive.

While the award recognizes Laurie’s leadership, it also reflects the work of the organizations, coaches, educators, and community leaders who are creating opportunities for young people every day. The Illumination Fund is proud to partner with these organizations and to invest in a future where every child, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive.
