Americans for the Arts
Program: Access to Arts
Area of Work: Arts
Grant Purpose: Diversity in Arts Leadership Program
Overview
Driven by a belief in access to “all the arts by all the people,” Americans for the Arts’ mission is to build recognition and support for the extraordinary and dynamic value of the arts and to lead, serve, and advance the diverse networks of organizations and individuals who cultivate the arts in America.
Grant
Purpose: To support the Diversity in Arts Leadership (DIAL) program, which strives to strengthen and advance diversity in the arts management field by building a diverse pipeline of future leaders.
DIAL matches undergraduate students from backgrounds that are traditionally untapped for arts leadership with internships at energetic host arts organizations in New York City as well as with mentors to guide their personal and professional growth throughout a 10-week summer program.
Impact
During the three years of the Illumination Fund’s support, DIAL has provided 36 interns with real-world career experience in the arts in New York City. Since the program’s inception in the early 1990’s, half of the program alumni have pursued careers in the arts, and approximately 4 in 10 have become managers or executives at their organizations so far.
