Echoing Green’s Fellowship Program annually provides more than $1 million in seed funding to a diverse group of 40-50 social entrepreneurs worldwide. The process to become a Fellow is rigorous, and fewer than 1% of applicants are chosen for the two year Fellowship. Once selected, a Fellow has access to top-notch mentoring opportunities and professional development. The fellowship also becomes a springboard for securing other grants and a soapbox for inspiring others to be civically engaged. In April 2011, Echoing Green launched its new book Work on Purpose, which challenges Millennials to uncover what social issues inspire them to action, and presents changemakers’ stories and methodologies as inspiration.
With support from the Illumination Fund, Echoing Green has elevated Work on Purpose(WonP) from a pilot to a full program. It focuses on equipping 18-35 year-olds to make purpose-based life and work decisions that will last. The program trains faculty and staff at colleges, universities, and non-profits to help emerging professionals engage in critical thinking and develop competencies necessary for identifying and acting on their purpose. Funding from the foundation has helped Echoing Green to expand their impact in NYC and establish the city as a hub for WonP activities and to incubate some of their most innovative ideas.
From the Echoing Green Playbook:
Drawing from the best practices of Echoing Green’s Fellows, Echoing Green uncovered a framework for developing successful careers with social impact: Heart + Head = Hustle. This framework is the backbone for Echoing Green’s Work on Purpose book.
They define your “heart” as those issues, ideas, and people that move you. These are the issues and ideas that make your heart beat faster, be it because you are so deeply compelled by them, because you are angered by them, or because they bring you joy. They define your “head” as your skills, abilities, knowledge, connections, and everything else you bring to the table.
When you build a life and a career that aligns your heart and your head, in which you work from both of these hemispheres, you achieve what Echoing Green calls “hustle.” This refers to those times in which you are really moving. You are in the zone, losing track of time, doing the work you’d do for free (even when you get paid for it!) Why? Because you are driven by something extraordinary: your personal purpose.
