Wellness in the Schools
Good Neighbor Grant
Through partnerships with public schools, NYC restaurants, and culinary schools, WITS works to inspire healthy eating and fitness as a way of life for children in public elementary schools. Chefs work with cafeteria staff in schools for a two-year period to teach healthier recipes and make sure that procurement will not cost additional money, while simultaneously working with kids in the classroom to explore what they will be eating in the lunchroom using a hands-on approach. With the Illumination Fund’s general operating support, WITS has been able to continue growing and strengthening its program, as well as connecting with other New York City partners.
To date, WITS has worked with 50 schools and over 25,000 students, the majority of whom are from low-income families. With access to healthy food in the cafeteria and opportunities to learn about it in the classroom, kids then ask their parents for the same at home.
