Program: Access to Arts
Area of Work: Arts
Grant Purpose: Capital Campaign
The Shed is a cultural center dedicated to commissioning and presenting original works of art, across all disciplines, for all audiences. The Shed brings together established and emerging artists in fields ranging from hip hop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance.
Purpose: To support the construction of The Shed.
Opened in April 2019, The Shed is an innovative 200,000-square-foot structure that physically transforms to support artists’ most ambitious ideas.
The Shed brings newly commissioned works in the performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture together under one flexible roof. The Shed’s dynamic presentation of art from all disciplines celebrates both established and emerging artists, and the organization has partnered with public schools, New York City Housing Authority community centers, and Beacon youth programs to engage young people from all five boroughs in programs that nurture self-expression and civic engagement through dance and the literary arts.
